She has Mexican heritage, but is American as a national. Her desire to play sports began as a small child. Gerina began golfing when she was the age of 15. Gerina completed her high school education through Goddard High School. While she was in high school, she took home her first prize in the New Mexico state golf tournament. She was also an athlete in volleyball who played at the state level. The first time she attended at the University of Texas. In her senior year, she won each tournament she entered. In the course of her undergraduate studies, she earned the titles of Conference USA Female Athlete and Conference USA Individual Player of the Years.
